Culms erect, straight, 2-5 m tall, 1-3 cm in diam., deep green, smooth, internodes 20-30 cm long; nodes minutely prominent; branches 3-5 or more in clusters at each node.
Sheath of culm partially persistent, coriaceous, hard, glabrous, entire; auricles of sheath small or inconspicuous; ligule of sheath truncate, entire; blade of sheath linear, acute glabrous. Leaves 4-10, narrowly lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, 6-25 cm long, 5-15 mm broad, acute, base cuneate, veins 3-5, veinlets 6-7, tessellate; petioles 3-5 mm long; auricles of leaf small, with tuft of bristles; ligule of leaf convex, rounded, aristate; sheath of leaf 3-5 cm long, glabrous.
Spikelets linear, 5-10 cm long, 3-4 mm in diam., 7-15-flowered; glumes 2, oblong-lanceolate; lemmas ovate-oblong, 9-17 mm long, 4-7.5 mm wide, veins 13; paleas 7-15 mm long, 4-7 mm wide, bilobed at apex, veins 3 between keels, 3 between each and edge, densely hairy on keels; ovary cylindric, glabrous, with 2 vascular strands in cross section; style short with 3 feathery stigmas; stamens 3, filaments long, anthers 7.5 mm long; lodicules 3, obovate, 3-4 mm long, 1.2-1.5 mm in diam., hairy along margins.

台灣 : Introduced from Japan to the Taipei Botanic Garden in 1900; planted in Taipei, Tahchung, Nantou, Chiayi and Kaohsiung for ornamental purposes.
世界 : Native of southern China.
